In a powerful display of unity, peace and hope, over 40,000 residents of the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region and surrounding areas gathered last Saturday for the Covenant Prayer Walk, which served as a symbolic call for peace and harmony ahead of Ghana’s 2024 general election.
As early as 5:30 a.m., enthusiastic participants donned white Duamenefa T-shirts and converged at the Aflao Border Market to begin a three-kilometre journey to Swanzy Beach in Denu. The walk, the third of its kind after similar events in 2016 and 2020, was not just a local affair-it marked a national rallying cry for a peaceful electoral process, drawing participants from all 16 regions of Ghana.
The event was organized by the Duamenefa Foundation, a social intervention non-governmental organisation (NGO) renowned for its dedication to social harmony. It brought together a diverse group, including registered volunteers of the Duamenefa Foundation, representatives from Security agencies, political parties, and a cross-section of the public. Its inclusive nature was bolstered by representatives from every region in Ghana, reflecting its national character.
Duamenefa Foundation
The Executive President of Duamenefa Foundation and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Fafaa 100.3 FM, Emmanuel Ketaman Evortepe, emphasised the significance of the walk describing it as both a spiritual and symbolic gesture. He said for the first time representatives from all 16 regions of Ghana participated in the walk, which symbolized its national character.
Traditionalists turned out in their numbers
He called on the participants not to involve themselves in any election violence, and added that “elections are about contest of ideas but not firing of guns.”
Mr. Ketaman Evortepe asked for God’s protection and guidance for all Ghanaians as they went out in their numbers on Saturday to exercise their franchise.
“This is the third edition after successful walks in 2016 and 2020. It is a call for national unity as we seek divine intervention for peaceful elections and to seal the numerous prayers being offered by various institutes to God,” he told the Daily Graphic.
