Keta Municipal Hospital Launches 100th Anniversary Celebration

The Keta Municipal Hospital, located in the Volta Region of Ghana, has officially launched activities to mark its 100th anniversary in a colourful ceremony held on Wednesday, 2nd October 2025. The event took place at the hospital premises in Keta, drawing together dignitaries, traditional leaders, health professionals, cultural groups, media, and members of the public.

Although the hospital will turn 100 years old in 2026, the anniversary was launched early to allow room for other major programs and celebrations planned ahead of the official date.

The event was chaired by Torgbui Tagbor III, who expressed pride in leading such a significant occasion. He commended the hospital’s growth over the years and its continued importance in healthcare delivery across the region.

In an exclusive interview with Fafaa 100.3 FM, conducted by Godwin Lumor, Torgbui Tagbor III emphasized the hospital’s legacy and called for public support, especially for health workers who have relocated from distant areas to serve the community.

Also, addressing the gathering was the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Keta Municipality, Hon. Seade Wisdom, who congratulated the hospital and its staff for their dedication. He highlighted President John Dramani Mahama’s initiative to develop portions of CHPS compounds in various communities, with implementation expected to begin soon. He confirmed that the project will be supported through the District Assemblies Common Fund.

Hon. Seade further noted that recent assessments at the hospital revealed a need for equipment and supplies in the emergency department, theatre, and diagnostic center. He pledged that steps would be taken to provide the necessary support to improve service delivery.

Adding her voice to the celebration was Professor Lydia Aziator, Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho. She expressed appreciation for the anniversary program and applauded the hospital’s contributions to healthcare. She urged residents to treat health workers with respect and support, recognizing their sacrifices, and encouraged hospital staff to remain committed to delivering quality care.

The Medical Superintendent of Keta Municipal Hospital, Dr. Kofi Bonso, also addressed the audience. He described the launch event as beautiful and historic, adding that the hospital reaching 100 years is not only a celebration of the past, but a call to action for the future.

Dr. Bonso revealed that plans are in place to transition the hospital from a primary healthcare facility to a secondary-level hospital, which will allow it to handle more referral cases locally.

This shift, he explained, will reduce the number of patients needing to be referred elsewhere for minor conditions, allowing the hospital to provide more timely treatment.

He therefore urged the general public, stakeholders, and government partners to support the hospital’s vision, as this transformation will significantly improve healthcare access in the municipality.

The program also featured a moving testimony from Mr. Thompson Teku, a past patient and accident survivor, who once received treatment at Keta Municipal Hospital. He expressed deep gratitude to the hospital’s medical team for saving his life years ago after a serious car accident. He praised the dedication of the health workers and urged them to continue with their lifesaving work. He also appealed for better understanding and communication between patients and health practitioners, to prevent conflicts and strengthen trust in healthcare delivery.

The event was well-attended by traditional rulers, including the Divisional Chief of Keta, Torgbui James Ocloo V, Mama Tokormi, and other notable chiefs and queen mothers from the area.

Media houses, including Fafaa 100.3 FM, Dzodze, were present to cover the celebration, alongside cultural groups who added a vibrant and colourful display of tradition to the event.

In closing, Hon. Seade expressed gratitude on behalf of the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, thanking all participants and supporters of the hospital.

The centenary celebration is expected to include a range of activities that will reflect on the hospital’s legacy, celebrate its achievements, and plan for a stronger future in healthcare delivery across the municipality and the region.
